Greg’s Author Meme

Friday, 09. May 2008

Greg (A Life in the Day) did this author meme. It looked interesting. Unfortunately, I left a numbskull comment on Greg’s post. Sorry, Greg. D’uh. It was by author, not by title and I did by title.

So, prone as I am to cheating on things like this I tried slipping in a couple of poets and playwrights. I still didn’t get them all. As you will note, there are not too many contemporary writers on the list. I’m not much into the hot best sellers.

Twenty-five Books: A to Z

Make an alphabetical list of some favorite books and authors, listed by author:

A - Asminov, Isaac - Chronology of Science and Discovery [Great bathroom book - filled with little snippets of information that no one (but me?) is interested in knowing.]
B - Bolt, Robert - A Man for All Seasons [A play, but a great one.]
C - Crane, Stephen - The Red Badge of Courage [classic]
D - Dickens, Charles - A Tale of Two Cities ['nuther classic]
E - Eliot, George - Silas Marner
F - Faulkner, William - The Sound and the Fury [I did a paper on this book once. Sometimes when I reread what I write, I think I must write in "stream of consciousness".]
G - Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von - Faust [auf Deutsch!]
H - Huxley, Aldous - Brave New World [Amazing, when you realize it was written in the early 1930's!]
I - Ibsen, Henrik - A Doll’s House
J - Johnson, James Weldon - The Creation [Beautiful poem!]
K - Kleist, Heinrich von - Michael Kohlhaas [Short, but very difficult when read in the original German]
L - Lewis, C. S. - The Screwtape Letters
M - Miller, Walter M. - A Canticle for Leibowitz [Among other things, it makes you giggle when you read about people finding ancient manuscripts and artifacts and then tell you what they meant or were used for.]
N - Nabakov?
O - Orwell, George - 1984 [One of THE most important books for our time!! It should be required for reading, study, and understanding before anyone is handed a diploma!]
P - Poe, Edgar Allen - The Pit and the Pendulum [The room is closing in!]
Q -
R - Rand, Ayn - Anthem [Could not think of an another "R"]
S - Swift, Jonathan - Gulliver’s Travels [Now who woulda thunk this one would be on ole Lem's list!]
T - Twain, Mark - Letters from the Earth [I love the writings about the "recording angel" talking about the prayers of the mine owner!]
U - Updike, John - Rabbit, Run [Takes place in the "metro area" in which the new Lake Gonebelow is located. Updike once lived in the area.]
V - Vonnegut, Kurt - Player Piano [I love the farmer's doctoral thesis!]
W - Wallace, Lew - Ben-Hur [The hard part of reading this book is erasing Charlton Heston from your memory. Now Stephen Boyd is another matter! ;) ]
X - Xenephon - Anabasis [Xenephon? Yes, and in Greek. Many years ago. "The river is uncrossable." (I can't get the editor to accept a Greek font.)]
Y - Yeats - The Second Coming ['nuther poem]
Z - Zola?

The question marks indicate an author that I am familiar with but whose works I would not classify as fav’s.

* * *

That’s a wrap.

Sending HUGS to all!

  1. Very cool list, I am totally stealing this.

  2. Great collection of titles! I’ve read “Canticle for Lebovitz”, too. Very interest glimpse into a post-apocalyptic future. As for Vonnegut, I almost chose him, but trying to decide which book had my head spinning.

  3. Most of these books are written above my grade level. ;)

  4. You read all the hard stuff. There’s not a single Danielle Steelle book on your list.

  5. Wow, Lem. I really love to read and I’ve plowed my way through a lot of the classics (Spo and I were just emailing about the Screwtape Letters!) but I’m not so much with the foreign languages. You are very well… read!

  6. Great list. Canticle for Leibowitz is a favorite.

  7. what a great meme idea!
And D is definitely for Dickens.

  8. An interesting list! Sadly, I think I would probably only be able to fill in about half (if that much). :-|
