To Walk

Tuesday, 17. April 2007

Has it only been a year?
And before that the long months.
Seed and ovum met.

Only a year.
The helpless one cried then.
His tiny hands and arms reached up instinctively for help.
He did not see.
He just knew someone was there.
Someone who cared.
Someone who loved.
He could not then.
Walk, that is.
That someone carried him where he needed to go.
That someone fed him.
That someone cradled him.

And now a year.
His cries are of delight, not pain nor fear.
His small hands and arms reach out to meet the hands extended to him.
He sees now.
He sees the one who is there.
The one who cares.
The one who loves.
He totters and his foot comes forward.
His first step.
He will walk now.
He will go where he wants to go.
He will feed himself.
While someone guides him.

The years run; they do not walk.
Even as in his youthful manhood he runs and walks no more.
His strong hands and arms reach out to embrace the one he loves.
He sees differently now.
Another one who is his love.
One who cares.
One who loves.
They walk together
Hand in hand.
Where they wish

But life is not kind.

He is helpless now.
In his helplessness he cries.
His arms reach up and out in his weakness for help.
Is anyone there?
Someone who cares?
Someone who loves?
He cannot anymore.
Walk, that is.
Someone needs to carry him.
Someone needs to feed him.
Someone needs to cradle him.

Someone needs to walk for him.
He has AIDS.
